Well, here he is. The last member of the main cast:

As you can see, this guy was a major pain for me to design. I don’t think I’ve ever had to draw that many heads in order to get someone’s look right.

There were two major issues when I was developing this character:

Firstly, I was actually sure what I wanted him to be. I knew his role, but I didn’t really have much of an idea as to how I wanted him to look, behave or interact with the other cast.

Secondly, I didn’t want him to be a clichéd nerd. This is difficult, because I tend to lean towards clichés. I like them. Trying to make the character an obvious nerd without embracing the obvious stereotypes was tricky. I’m not sure I really got it, but I did avoid the pocket protector, acne, the horse-teeth and the sticky-tape on the glasses. This was made even more difficult by the fact that the first character was pretty nerdy, and this buy had to be even more-so.

Thirdly, I’d gotten to this point and realised that my entire cast was white — with the possible exception of the kappa whom, presumably, would be Japanese. While they’re going to be ethnically diverse, they were all Caucasian. And I didn’t want the entire cast to be white. So I had to break it up a little, and to make him black. I actually found this difficult. He kept looking too ‘cool’ and I didn’t want him to look cool!

Anyway, there he is. The next step is to draw out a final draft of each. Probably in a line-up so I can gage their heights compared to one-another. After that, a drawing of the full main-cast all together.
